A Day of Reckoning for America's Jews
Time to look in the mirror and see who's standing next to you.
I don’t believe I’ve done this before, but I’m going to republish a thread I just posted on X:
1. American Jewry has reached a moment of clarity. Events of the past few days have given each of us the opportunity to assess our political, social, and organizational affiliations and alliances.
2. Our fellow Jews have been brutalized and massacred. We've witnessed large scale rape, torture, brutality, and mutilation of dead bodies. The victims, if not 100% Jews, were all targeted because they were either Jews or friends of Jews.
3. Amidst this barbarism, American responses have fallen into three groups. The largest--as is always the case--has been silent. For them, we must extrapolate from past statements and behavior to determine where they are most likely to stand.
4. A thankfully sizable group has responded with the outrage and revulsion we would expect from true friends. They are as eager to see this evil exterminated as are we.
5. A dangerously large group has cheered the barbarians, equivocated, sought equivalence between victims and perpetrators, explained the the victims had provoked this response, or called for measured responses.
6. If you are Jewish, know this: Every one of those people would have the same reaction were the victim you, your children, or your elderly parents. They are vile antisemites who tolerate your existence because they're too genteel to enact the barbarism they think we deserve.
7. Perhaps some of them have wonderful senses of humor or a generous willingness to pick up the check. Perhaps they are wonderfully talented professionals. Perhaps they donate to charities.
8. Perhaps they share your views on immigration, or the climate, or abortion, or guns, or Ukraine, or race relations, or tax policy, or any of the other priorities defining the fabric of American political and social life.
9. That's all fine. They may be otherwise wonderful people whose only tiny flaw is that they would cheer--secretly or openly--the murder of your Jewish child.
Whatever else they may be, they are not your friends and they do not make suitable allies.
10. If you've ever found yourself standing toe-to-toe with any of them, the moment has come to rethink your priorities, your alliances, and your political affiliations.
If you're an American Jew, there are two groups of people you must consider your own: Americans and Jews.
11. If you do not prioritize the safety of your own people above all else, don't be surprised when others determine that "you and your kind" are cheap, disposable, and deserving of brutality.
12. Take a long hard look at the people and organizations rallying to cheer Hamas. If you recognize any of them as allies or fellow travelers, take a long, hard look in the mirror.
13. If you change your self-perception and your behavior, we will welcome you to the side of light, the side of decency, the side of life.
If not, know now that when some 21st c. group displaces the Nazis as the ultimate evil, you will likely count yourself among them. /end
