Expertise & Groupthink
"Incremental Outrageousness," the central theme I developed in the New Civil War, is very much in the news these days
Every now & then you find yourself in a good place.
The higher education moment I noted in Send Us Your Students! continues. Looks like Bill Ackman may actually be leading the charge, putting money and attention on the problems that many of us identified decades ago.
Higher Education in America is a hollow shell. Yes, it’s got pockets of excellence but overall? Bad teaching, poor research, inverted ethics, zero moral character, rampant discrimination, narrow thinking—you name it, American Higher Ed gets it wrong.
Most of the attention, however, has focused on an important manifestation of the problem rather than on its source. Now, don’t get me wrong: I’ve got nothing positive to say about DEI. The problem, however, is the incentive system that gave us DEI. That was my overarching theme in The New Civil War. I stand by it.

“Removing a few poorly chosen, underperforming college Presidents is a start. Dismantling a bureaucracy that is committed to engaging in current discrimination to remedy past discrimination would help also. But the only way to truly fix the problem is to alter the incentives.”
It's the fashion these days for reactionaries to offer expert analysis of DEI's occupying regime but your essay doesn't leave us stranded by proposing the remedial action—on paper and in practice (i.e., your pioneering work at the New College).
