Fixing Major Problems in My Copious Spare Time
I had a couple of minutes, so I thought I'd weigh in on campus free speech and Middle East stability. Because someone should.
I seem to have come up from air and decided to fix two simple problems: Promoting free speech in higher education and stabilizing the Middle East. And it’s only Wednesday!
Of course, in my guise as a guy who writes occasional opinion pieces, my notion of “fixing” might be a bit off. More like putting some ideas into play.
On the free speech in higher education front, I decided that it was time to address some of the challenges hurled our way at New College of Florida. If, by some chance, you’re neither in the Sarasota area nor a consumer of our local press, just take my word for it—we get a lot of flak. Someone had to set the record straight.
On the Middle East front, I have to believe that recent events provide a rare opportunity to kick open the Overton Window. So I tried—again—courtesy of RealClearPolitics. It’s the same basic idea I’ve been raising for years:
Europeans devised the nation-state in 1648. For 300 years they waged wars. At the end of each war, they shifted borders and moved populations. Then in 1948, they decided they liked where they landed, drew artificial lines across the world, and announced that border shifts and population moves were off the table. If the Middle East is to stabilize, it will need to deploy the tools that eventually stabilized Europe—notwithstanding what Europeans might now say.
Feedback is welcome, as always. And please, talk up the need for redrawing borders and shifting populations! It’s the only way to stabilize much of the world, prevent future mass-casualty wars and genocides, and maximize human flourishing.
