Research Reform
A major new article tying together many themes and threads near-and-dear to my heart...and perhaps yours.
Quick note today to announce a major article I published this week. Rethinking Research appears in the Fall 2025 issue of National Affairs. It’s substantive, which means that it’s long, but it’s still only half of what I had to say on the topic. My original draft ran 10K words with about 50 footnotes. I had to cut it in half and drop the notes to get it published.
So what’s in this article? I tie together a number of issues I’ve discussed over the years (and in many of my books), including:
The corruption of higher education & the need for reform;
The nature of scientific proof;
How to break the monopolistic “cult of expertise;”
Innovation policy & why it’s time for reform;
How a prior shift in innovation policy powered the American economic boom of the 1980s & 1990s;
The predictable pattern that every industry goes through when it enters the information age;
How the “scientific establishment” failed the public—and itself—during Covid;
How data science & AI break open the frontiers of knowledge, democratize the process, and threaten the incumbents.
Why Napster’s threat to the music industry parallels the DIY research movement during Covid—and what was really going on with the anti-misinformation campaigns.
…and more. So please, follow the link, read the article, share it with anyone you know who might be interested, and feel free to follow-up with questions, feedback, and insights.
