The New College of Florida
The New College of Florida is a bold experiment in institutional reclamation. I'm thrilled to be joining the team!
I’ve got some exciting professional news to share!Â
After nearly 20 years as a solo consultant retained primarily to help corporations fight, I’ve been given the opportunity to join a team dedicated to building something new and great. Effective today (Aug. 7th), I am the new Executive Director of New Student and Graduate Admissions at the New College of Florida in Sarasota.Â
For me, it’s something of a dream job. It hands me a genuine opportunity to play a key role in an experiment designed to answer a critical question: Is it possible to reclaim America’s institutions? If you’ve read The New Civil war, you know that reclaiming American higher education has been a dream of mine since the early 1990s.
If you don’t know New College (I didn’t, until pretty recently), it was founded as high-end, idea-focused, alternative liberal arts college in 1960. It went broke in the mid-1970s and the state took it over. Since then, it’s operated as the smallest entrant in Florida’s public higher education system.Â
In recent years, the institution has fallen upon hard times. Amidst constant calls to save the state some money by handing the campus to other parts of Florida’s state system, Governor DeSantis and the Legislature decided to bet instead on rebuilding it as a top-rated, public, liberal arts college promoting a classical education.Â
I first learned of these efforts in January, and I spent six months looking for the best way to join the effort. It bore fruit. I am thrilled to be joining the new New College team. Watch us and see what we build!Â
And if you know of any promising High School students who might be interested in joining this experiment, please send them my way. After all, they are my current focus.
