Too Much Good News!
For the first time in my adult life, I feel like the people in charge are asking the right questions and working to solve the right problems. It's a glorious feeling.
You may have noticed that I haven’t posted much lately. At least, I hope you noticed—because I haven’t been posting much lately. I flatter myself with the belief that my insightful analysis and witty delivery has been missed. Hello? Anyone?
Part of my absence is that I’ve been busy. It happens. All good.
The more important reason for my absence is even better: The news these days is overwhelmingly positive.
I’ve never felt compelled to write merely for the thrill of seeing my thoughts in writing. I feel compelled to write when I believe that there’s something that needs to be said that’s not being said. At the moment, however, the Trump II Administration seems to be trumpeting many of my favorite messages.
Those of you who’ve been following my writings know that I have a long track record, for example, of insisting that the only chance for stability in the Middle East involves relocating the “Palestine Refugees” throughout the Arab/Islamic world. Since Oct. 7, my theme has been that this war is both the catalyst and the opportunity to clear them out of Gaza. For years, people have been afraid to utter this message. Seems they’re afraid that they might get accused of ethnic cleansing. Big deal. For the past year, the antisemitic sadists eager to trap those refugees in a terror-riven war zone have been accusing us of genocide. Getting their accusations bumped to ethnic cleansing would be a step up. And it’s unclear that I should really care what specific accusations sadistic hatemongers might hurl my way. But it’s been an impediment in getting the message out.
Not any more! Trump shattered that Overton Window. He did what I’ve been begging those with bigger megaphones to do for years: He put the idea into play. It’s now a permanent part of the conversation.
On domestic policy, I’ve been pushing the idea of zero-basing our regulatory code. That means looking at regulations one at a time to see which can be justified given contemporary needs. While that’s not quite what Musk has been doing at DOGE, it’s close enough. He and his team are taking a microscope to the entire regulatory code.
In a similar vein, one of my other themes has been that complexity raises costs for everyone and creates opportunities for the powerful to cheat. Once again Musk’s DOGE is shining the spotlight where the light is most needed.
The Overton Window is shifting in all the right directions!
I’ll go one step further. For most of my life, I’ve wanted to be part of the team fixing big problems, not just one more voice identifying them from the sidelines. While I certainly wouldn’t mind being part of this team, it just doesn’t feel as important as it has in the past. Why? Because my primary interest has been in getting the problems fixed, and it was very clear to me that the people in position to fix them lacked both the ability and the motivation to do so. For the first time in my life, I feel like there are good people working to identify and fix the problems in most dire need of fixing. Could I add to the team? Sure. Do I believe that we’re being well served even without my being on the team? Yes. And that’s a truly radical feeling.
Day after day after day, the good news keeps rolling in. Now, I’ll confess. I haven’t looked into everything that’s come out of this Administration, nor have I immersed myself in the details. But to date, I’ve yet to hear of anything that wasn’t at least directionally correct.
It’s a new feeling. It’s a great feeling. It lets me take a breather to focus elsewhere.
So what can I say? With Trump and his new team running the show, laissez les bons temps rouler!
